Is Safety Training Required?

In short, yes – safety training for any hazards that may be present in a work environment is required by law.  Not only that, but OSHA Aligned training is required to keep employees safe in the workplace. Some employers settle for just providing a brief overview of how to be safe during onboarding. This includes touring the workplace, pointing out hazards, and giving general advice on what is and isn’t safe to do. This type of training is referred to as a “makeshift session” and it doesn’t comply with OSHA’s standards. Employees who lack sufficient knowledge on the regulations that make a safe work environment have a far greater chance of being injured on the job.

What Type of Courses are Required?

OSHA requires training for every hazard that may be present in one’s workplace. For high-risk environments such as construction or general industry, OSHA recommends training on what it refers to as the “fatal four”. These include falling hazards, struck-by hazards, caught-in/between (crushing) hazards, and electrocutions. These accidents tend to have the highest mortality rate of all hazards and require the most immediate attention.

Most machines and vehicles also require a great amount of attention when it comes to safety. For vehicles, this includes making sure they’re up-to-date on their safety measures (i.e. installing rollover protection on tractors) as well as making sure employees are trained on how to operate them safely. For machines, this usually means installing proper guarding, installing signs and warning labels, training employees on proper use, and providing them with protective equipment (i.e. earplugs or gloves).

Lastly, OSHA requires a competent person for first aid, CPR, and emergency action plans in most workplaces. These types of training can be useful in any work environment. Hazards such as a fire or CPR may not seem likely, however, disasters never happen when we expect them to. Therefore, preparing for the worst can help ensure the best outcome in any bad situation.
